Other Livestock

Alpacas can be kept with other domesticated farm animals including horses, donkeys, sheep or poultry. They will ward off foxes, and are commonly used as sheep guards for newly born lambs. We have run our free range hens in the same paddock with great success.

However, some caution is advised when introducing new groups of animals, and we wouldn't advise grazing alpacas and cattle in the same paddock.

They will become accustomed to pets given a little time, but it is crucial to make sure your family dog is not able to worry or upset them. Pregnant alpacas can abort a pregnancy due to the stress of being chased, and potentially serious injury or death can result from a panicked attempt to escape, even if they are not caught.
